How to Play TrigammonX – Three-Player Backgammon Rules

TrigammonX™ is backgammon reimagined for three players.

Three players. Two opponents. One board. One winner.

TrigammonX takes many of the ideas that make traditional backgammon so compelling — racing, blocking, hitting, entering from the Bar and bearing off — and adapts them to a purpose-designed three-player, 36-point board.

Each player begins with 15 checkers and moves counter-clockwise around the board toward their own Inner Board and bearing-off area.

The first player to successfully bear off all 15 checkers wins.

Whether you already play traditional backgammon or are discovering the game for the first time, TrigammonX adds a completely different strategic challenge:

You have two opponents to watch instead of one.

The Objective

Your goal is simple:

Move all 15 of your checkers around the board and bear them off before either of your two opponents.

Getting there is another matter.

With three players competing for position, a safe point can quickly become threatened, a strong lead can disappear, and a move aimed at one opponent may create an opportunity for the other.

TrigammonX is a race — but positioning, timing, blocking and risk management all matter.

The Three Players

TrigammonX is always played with three seats: Blue, Green and Red.

Each player has 15 checkers and follows their own route around the 36-point Trigammon board.

All three players move counter-clockwise toward their respective Inner Boards and bearing-off areas.

In TrigammonX, the three seats can be controlled in several ways:

  • 3 Human players
  • 2 Human players + 1 AI player
  • 1 Human player + 2 AI opponents

There are no teams. Each of the three players competes individually to be the first to bear off all 15 checkers.

This means you can play TrigammonX with friends, add an AI player when only two people are available, or play solo against two computer-controlled opponents.

Starting a Game

Before play begins, choose how each of the three seats will be controlled.

You can play with:

  • Three Human players
  • Two Human players and one AI player
  • One Human player against two AI opponents

TrigammonX currently provides three AI levels:

AI Easy • AI Normal • AI Pro

This allows new players to learn at a comfortable pace while giving more experienced players a stronger challenge.

You can also choose between Triple Dice and Official 2 Dice, providing two distinctly different ways to experience three-player backgammon.

Triple Dice

Triple Dice delivers a fast-moving TrigammonX experience.

Rolling three dice creates additional movement possibilities, more combinations and often more tactical choices during a single turn.

The extra die can dramatically change the board. A position that appeared safe at the beginning of a turn may suddenly offer an attacking opportunity, an escape route or an entirely different strategic choice.

Triple Dice is particularly well suited to the dynamic, three-player nature of TrigammonX.

Official 2 Dice

TrigammonX can also be played using Official 2 Dice.

Two-dice games generally place greater emphasis on longer-term positioning and may take considerably longer to complete.

If you enjoy having to squeeze a little more out of every roll — and perhaps your brain as well — Official 2 Dice provides a different strategic challenge.

Games can be saved and resumed later, so there is no need to finish a long game in one sitting.

Moving Your Checkers

On your turn, roll the dice and use the available values to move your checkers.

All checkers move counter-clockwise around the board toward the player’s Inner Board and eventual bearing-off area.

The legal moves available to you depend on:

  • The dice you rolled
  • The current board position
  • The location of your own checkers
  • The positions occupied by your two opponents

During digital play, TrigammonX automatically identifies legal moves, allowing you to concentrate on choosing the best move rather than calculating which destinations are permitted.

Occupied Points and Blocking

Points occupied by opposing checkers can restrict where you are able to move.

Building groups of protected points can create barriers and make it more difficult for an opponent to advance.

With three players, however, blocking becomes considerably more interesting.

A defensive position designed to stop one opponent may also affect the route of the other. A block that protects you from Red may unintentionally help Green — or vice versa.

This interaction between three competing players is one of the major strategic differences between TrigammonX and traditional two-player backgammon.

Blots and Hitting

A single checker left exposed on a point can be vulnerable.

If an opponent can legally land on that checker, it is hit and moved to that player’s Bar.

Hitting an opponent can seriously slow their progress, but three-player backgammon introduces an additional consideration:

Attacking one opponent may benefit the other.

Sometimes the strongest move is aggressive. Sometimes it may be better to let your two opponents fight each other.

Choose your battles carefully.

The Bar

A checker that has been hit is placed on the Bar.

A player with a checker on the Bar must re-enter it according to the legal movement rules before continuing normal movement around the board.

Getting trapped on the Bar can be costly — particularly when two opponents continue advancing while you try to re-enter.

Bearing Off

Once your checkers have completed their journey around the board and reached the required bearing-off position, you can begin bearing off.

Bearing off removes your checkers from play.

Your objective is to bear off all 15 checkers before either opponent.

The first player to bear off all 15 checkers wins the game.

Why Three Players Changes Backgammon

Traditional backgammon asks you to beat one opponent.

TrigammonX asks you to deal with two.

You may be leading one player while trailing the other. One opponent may hit you while the third player benefits. A defensive move can unexpectedly become an attacking opportunity. A comfortable race can suddenly become a battle for survival.

Successful TrigammonX play therefore involves more than simply moving quickly.

You need to watch both opponents, judge risk, protect vulnerable checkers, create blocks, recognise opportunities and decide when aggression is worth the danger.

That constantly changing three-way relationship is at the heart of:

Regular Play

Regular Play is the everyday TrigammonX game environment.

Choose your Human and AI players, dice mode, board design and other preferences, then play at your own pace.

Play with three people, add an AI player to a two-person game, or challenge two AI opponents by yourself.

Games can be saved and resumed later, making Regular Play ideal for casual games, practice and experimentation.

Tournament Mode

Tournament Mode provides a more competitive TrigammonX playing environment with dedicated timing and tournament controls.

Players must manage both their checker decisions and their available time.

Tournament controls are kept separate from ordinary Regular Play, allowing players to choose the style of three-player backgammon they prefer.

TrigammonX Academy™

Position Lab • Practice • Learn

TrigammonX Academy™ is where you can experiment, practise and explore strategy.

Create your own valid board positions, decide who moves next, choose Human or AI opponents and begin playing directly from that position.

You can:

  • Test an endgame
  • Put yourself on the Bar
  • Start from behind
  • Create an awkward bear-off position
  • Experiment with Official 2 Dice
  • Replay and study interesting positions

Academy allows you to experiment with situations that might otherwise take many normal games to encounter naturally.

You can save interesting positions, replay them, retry a previous turn using the same dice, request a suggested play, or edit the position and try something completely different.

Academy practice does not affect your normal Career Stats.

It is a place to experiment, make mistakes, test ideas and explore different TrigammonX strategies without penalty.
